Description

Rwanda's Big Five safari — a comeback
story that will blow your mind.

Stretching across Rwanda's eastern border with Tanzania, Akagera National Park is one of Africa's most inspiring conservation success stories — and one of its most thrilling safari destinations. A mosaic of open savanna, sparkling lakes, papyrus swamps, and rolling woodland, Akagera is Rwanda's wild east — raw, dramatic, and absolutely alive.

Once devastated, the park has been remarkably reborn. Lions were reintroduced in 2015. Black rhinos followed in 2017. Today, Akagera is the only Big Five destination in Rwanda — where lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinos all roam freely across a landscape that feels timeless and untouched. To witness this recovery firsthand is to witness the very best of what conservation can achieve.

Set out on a game drive at dawn as the mist lifts from Lake Ihema and hippos sink lazily back into the water. Watch herds of elephants move silently through the acacia woodland. Scan the tall grass for the flick of a lion's tail. Then take to the water on a boat safari — gliding past crocodiles, hippos, and hundreds of vibrant waterbirds in one of Rwanda's most serene and spectacular settings.

With over 500 bird species recorded within its borders, Akagera is also a paradise for birdwatchers — from the iconic shoebill stork lurking in the papyrus to a dazzling array of kingfishers, herons, and eagles. Whether you're a first-time safari-goer or a seasoned wildlife traveler, Akagera will surprise, thrill, and move you in ways you didn't expect.

FAQs

Game drives depart from the park entrance or your lodge at sunrise — typically around 6:00 AM — to make the most of the cooler morning hours when wildlife is most active. Evening game drives depart around 4:00 PM and offer excellent chances of spotting predators before sunset.

Morning game drives typically return to the lodge or park gate by mid-morning, around 10:00–11:00 AM. Evening drives conclude just after sunset. Full-day game drives run from dawn to dusk with a midday break. We can arrange transfers back to Kigali at any point.

Yes! We offer comfortable road transfers from Kigali International Airport directly to Akagera National Park. The drive takes approximately 2.5–3 hours and passes through some of Rwanda's most beautiful countryside. Share your flight details at booking and we will handle everything.

Akagera safaris are suitable for all ages, making them one of the most family-friendly wildlife experiences in Rwanda. There is no minimum age requirement for game drives. Children are welcome and absolutely love the experience — this is Africa's Big Five up close and personal.
