Description

Africa's most legendary safari destination.
Every visit rewrites what you thought possible.

There are wildlife destinations, and then there is the Maasai Mara. Sprawling across 1,510 square kilometres of southwestern Kenya, this iconic reserve is Africa's most celebrated safari destination; a landscape of sweeping golden grasslands, winding rivers, and ancient acacia groves that has captured the imagination of travellers, filmmakers, and wildlife lovers for generations.

The Mara is big cat country like nowhere else on earth. Lions rule the plains in large, powerful prides. Cheetahs streak across the open grassland in explosive, heart-stopping hunts. Leopards melt in and out of the riverine forest with ghostly elegance. To witness a predator hunt here in this open, cinematic landscape is to watch nature perform at the absolute peak of its power.

From July to October, the Mara becomes the final act of the Great Migration as hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra pour across the Tanzanian border, braving the crocodile-filled Mara River in some of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles ever witnessed. The ground shakes. The air fills with dust and noise. And you sit there, breathless, watching something that has unfolded on these plains since the dawn of time.

But the Mara is extraordinary in every season not just during the migration. Year-round, the reserve delivers world-class game viewing, breathtaking sunrises over the plains, and the unique privilege of experiencing Africa alongside the Maasai people one of the most iconic and culturally rich communities on the continent, whose ancestral lands border and overlap with the reserve itself.

The Maasai Mara experience what awaits you

Big Five game drives

Set out at dawn in an open 4x4 as the mist lifts and the Mara comes alive. Lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinos the Big Five roam freely across one of the most open and photogenic landscapes in all of Africa. Every drive is a new story.

The Great Migration river crossings

Between July and October, the Mara River becomes the stage for one of nature's most dramatic performances. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest plunge into the crocodile-filled waters in a thundering, chaotic, unforgettable spectacle of survival.

Hot air balloon safari

Rise before dawn and drift silently above the Mara in a hot air balloon as the sun paints the plains gold below your feet. Herds of elephants, giraffes, and lions move through the landscape beneath you and a champagne bush breakfast awaits on landing.

Maasai village cultural visit

Step into a traditional Maasai manyatta and experience one of Africa's most iconic cultures up close. Watch the jumping dance, hear ancient stories from Maasai elders, and browse handcrafted jewellery and beadwork made by local artisans. A deeply moving and memorable encounter.

Bush walks & night game drives

Walk the Mara on foot with an armed ranger guide for an intimate, ground-level perspective on the bush. After dark, night drives reveal a completely different world civets, genets, aardvarks, and prowling leopards emerge under a sky blazing with stars.

"The Maasai Mara gets into your blood. You arrive as a visitor and leave as someone who has seen Africa at its most raw, most beautiful, and most alive. Nothing is ever quite the same after that."

Whether you spend three nights or a full week in the Mara, this legendary reserve will fill every hour with wonder. Pair it with a visit to Amboseli or Samburu for the ultimate Kenya safari circuit, or extend your East Africa journey into Tanzania's Serengeti for a seamless cross-border wildlife adventure. The Mara is calling and you should answer.

Location
FAQs

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is located in southwestern Kenya, approximately 270 kilometres from Nairobi. You can reach it by a scenic 5–6 hour road transfer from Nairobi, or by a short 45-minute scheduled or charter flight from Wilson Airport in Nairobi directly to one of the Mara's several bush airstrips. We recommend flying for the best use of your time.

All game drives depart from your camp or lodge at sunrise β€” typically between 6:00 and 6:30 AM β€” when the Mara is at its most magical and wildlife is most active. Afternoon drives depart around 3:30–4:00 PM and run through to sunset. Our guides are in constant radio contact with ranger networks to ensure you are always in the right place at the right time.

Morning game drives return to camp by mid-morning for breakfast and rest. Evening drives conclude at sunset with a sundowner stop on the plains. Multi-day safaris conclude with a transfer or flight back to Nairobi, from where onward connections to other Kenya destinations or international departures can be arranged.

The Maasai Mara is a world-class safari destination year-round. However, the most sought-after time is July to October when the Great Migration river crossings are at their peak. January to March is equally spectacular for big cat sightings and calving season on the southern plains. The dry seasons β€” July to October and January to February β€” offer the finest overall game viewing conditions.

Yes β€” and it is one of the most iconic and unforgettable experiences in all of Africa. Balloons launch at sunrise and drift silently above the Mara plains for approximately one hour, offering a breathtaking bird's-eye view of the wildlife and landscape below. A traditional champagne bush breakfast is served on landing. We highly recommend adding this to your Mara itinerary.
